The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has arrived in Bawku, Upper East Region, leading a high-level team of operational, investigative, and intelligence officers to evaluate the tense security situation.

This urgent deployment comes in the wake of violent clashes between local youth and police that resulted in the death of one person.

Five others, including a police and immigration officer, were injured by gunfire and are currently receiving medical care.

A brief return to calm on April 9, achieved through a combined effort by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, was disrupted again on April 10.

A group of angry youth reportedly attacked and later set fire to the residence of the area’s Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku.

According to reports, the attack began with stone-throwing that damaged windows and other parts of the house. The situation escalated into an arson attack early the next day.

The unrest is believed to have been sparked by public outrage over the alleged police shooting of the young man.

In a statement released on April 10, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the IGP and his team would meet the family of the deceased, visit those injured, and support officers who suffered personal losses during the chaos.

The Police also reassured the public of continued cooperation with the Armed Forces, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to stabilize the area and restore peace.
