Sports and Recreation Minister-designate Kofi Adams has expressed serious concerns about the quality of astro turfs constructed in the country in recent years.
He raised this issue during his appearance before the Parliamentary Vetting Committee following his nomination by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama.
In his session, the Minister-Designate, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, stated his plans to ensure that the National Sports Authority (NSA) fulfills its designated role. He specifically addressed the issues related to the astro turfs.
“I have some concerns about the astro turfs. Some of them truly speaking, have not been constructed to standard. In one instance, it resulted in a very serious injury to the head of a player…so we will look at them, the ones that are not standard, in order to avoid some of these injuries, maybe we don’t use them for football but we can use them for other sports and recreational activities.”
The construction of community-based astro turfs was a flagship program under immediate past Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif.
