Human trafficking: 15-year-old Nigerian girl rescued by Police in Ghana
A 15-year-old Nigerian girl, who was trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana for sexual exploitation in Tarkwa, has been rescued by the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).
According to a press release from the Ghana Police, on Monday, November 3, 2025, police apprehended 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna at Aboso near Tarkwa.
This followed a report made by the victim’s father, Ogbonno Onuigbo, who stated that his daughter had gone missing in October 2025 in Nigeria.
The victim subsequently contacted him on October 24, 2025, disclosing that she had been trafficked and abused in Ghana.
An investigation conducted by the police revealed that one Golden Blessing, who is currently evading capture, had enticed the victim from Enugu to Lagos under the guise of providing her with a cleaning job.
She later handed the victim over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa.
Upon her arrival, the victim was confined to a room, coerced into sex work, and all earnings were seized by the suspect.
The release further indicated that, thanks to the intervention of a compassionate passerby, the victim managed to reach out to her father, which ultimately led to her rescue. A medical report confirmed that the victim is five weeks pregnant.
The suspect, Joy Ogbonna, is presently in police custody and is expected to be brought before the court shortly. Efforts are underway to apprehend her accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is believed to be in Nigeria.
The Western Central Regional Police Command expressed gratitude to the public for their support and swift action, reiterating its commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from all forms of exploitation.
