One person is feared dead while several others are injured after unknown gunmen opened fire on residents in Gor, a village in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region.
Reports indicate that the residents apprehended an armed man who was lurking around the community on Sunday, April 2, 2023.
While they gathered around the unknown man, other armed men emerged from the bushes and opened fire on the residents.
The victims were rushed to the Wa Regional Hospital, where one person was pronounced dead. The survivors are responding to treatment.
The Member of Parliament for Wa East Constituency, Godfred Seidu Jasaw, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, April 5, confirmed the incident but said the information surrounding it is still “sketchy”.
There are suspicions that the case may be a result of simmering chieftaincy and land disputes.
The MP also said some residents suspect the assailants may be illegal miners who are trying to assert their control of the area.
He, however, said the Assembly member for the area has assured that calm has been restored to the community.
Meanwhile, he said the case has been reported to the Upper West Regional Police Command and a manhunt has been launched to arrest the culprits.
“The police in Wa municipality were alerted and they got on to the scene but the assailants had left.
“At the moment, my information is that the case has been reported to the regional police CID,” the MP added.
