GUNA urges youth to resist being used as agents of instability ahead of 2020 elections
The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA), a civil society group, has urged the youth to refuse being used as agents of destruction to cause instability ahead of the 2020 general elections.
According to GUNA, the youth must be discerning enough to avoid plots orchestrated by political, religious and opinion leaders.
The advise comes on the back of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s speech at Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, that the country will continue to enjoy peace even as the political terrain for the 2020 general election grows “hotter and hotter”.
In an interview with The Ghana Report, the National Secretary for Youth Affairs at GUNA, Comrade Samuel Bamidele Ojo, argued that it is bad enough for the youthful population to be used as weapons to cause chaos in the country.
“It is time the educated youth especially, became wide awake to sensitize their fellow gullible youth to, if possible, turn the ‘sword’ against their paymasters who would never allow their children to involve themselves in such criminalities,” he said.
“The youth must channel their strength into viable engagements to better their lots instead of helping political leaders, traditional leaders, opinion leaders and the likes achieve their aim,” he stressed.
Comrade Bamidele Ojo disclosed that the youth ought to critically assess opinion leaders who come to them with all sorts of proposals and promises to lure them into doing their bidding.
“Be bold and ask these irresponsible opinion leaders who continue to reiterate that the youth are the future leaders of the country, yet would remote control them to distabilize the enviable peace of the nation,” he added.
“Why do you think opinion leaders will never employ their children or loved ones to be violent activists,” Comrade Bamidele Ojo quizzed.
Recounting the Xenophobic attacks which happened recently in South Africa, he said “the youth were used as agents to cause destruction in South Africa, and this is something as an Association, we want to avoid happening in any of the African countries.”
“The Ghana United Nations Association is therefore charging the youthful population to be wise and flee from any acts of violence that will burn their country or cause instability ahead of the 2020 elections,” he noted.
