GTEC demands proof of NaCCA deputy’s “Dr.” title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally requested the Acting Deputy Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), J. R. Achoanya Ayam, to provide documentary evidence supporting his use of the academic title “Dr.”

In a letter dated November 4, 2025, and signed by GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, the Commission expressed concern over the use of academic titles that a recognised institution may not have formally conferred.

“The use of such titles, particularly when they lack formal academic validation, can be misleading and is inconsistent with the established academic protocols and standards,” the letter stated.

GTEC has asked Mr. Ayam to submit details of the awarding institution, copies of his degree certificate, and official transcripts for verification.

If he fails to comply, he must cease using the title “Dr.” across all platforms, including official documents, websites, and professional profiles.

The directive has also been communicated to the Ministry of Education for enforcement.

GTEC’s letter replaces an earlier correspondence dated November 3 and requires full compliance by November 10.

The Commission emphasised that adherence to academic standards is essential for maintaining public trust and institutional integrity.
