The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) has said it is teaming up with the police to enforce the 15.3 per cent transport fare reduction.
The transport fare reduction was announced to take effect today, December 19, 2022.
However, some drivers, particularly intra-city drivers, have refused to comply with the 15.3 per cent cut.
According to Mr Sumaila Boakye, the Regional Chairman of GPRTU, they will be monitoring the compliance with the police to ensure that drivers comply with the reduction.
He said some members of GPRTU, together with the police, will be stationed at intersections in the region and monitor drivers to ensure compliance.
They have also threatened to sanction any member of the union who declines to reduce the fare.
He said although some of the transport stations are yet to receive the new fares, those who have received them should ensure strict compliance.
Mr Boakye assured that by the closed of Monday, the drivers would use the new fare while calling on passengers to exercise restraint.
Transport operators slashed fares by 15.3% effective Monday, December 19.
The downward review of transport fares was due to massive reductions in fuel prices by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for consecutive periods at the pumps.
The new fares were communicated in a press statement on Friday, December 16, jointly signed by the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Godfred Abulbire and the General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah.
They made the announcement after discussions with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport.
“Following the negotiations and in consideration with the plight of drivers, commuters and the general public, we have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 15.3%,” the statement explained.
“With the recent reductions in the prices of petroleum products, it became necessary to engage stakeholders to give consideration to a review of the fares in line with the Administrative Instrument”.
