Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has challenged the government to fulfill its promise to remove the COVID-19 levy, which it had committed to during its campaign.
Ahiagbah’s comments came after the government failed to announce the levy’s repeal in the 2025 budget.
In an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Ahiagbah questioned the government’s sincerity about its campaign promises, specifically regarding the COVID-19 levy.
He asked, “Will they repeal the COVID-19 levy? Are they going to remove it? If not, they should tell us.”
He criticised the government’s handling of its engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), describing it as mere “theatrics” that failed to address the core issues affecting Ghanaians.
Ahiagbah argued that retaining the COVID-19 levy contradicted the government’s earlier promises and continued to burden the citizens.
“While taxes have been removed, the COVID-19 levy should have been scrapped as well,” Ahiagbah stated. “They promised to remove it, yet they kept it to close the financial gap.”
However, during the 2025 budget presentation on March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson mentioned that the government plans to implement VAT reforms by the end of the year, which will include the abolition of the COVID-19 levy.
