The Upper East Region has uncovered significant mineral resources, particularly gold, in several of its districts.

According to the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, gold deposits have been found in seven out of the 15 district assemblies and municipalities within the region.

Minister Atanga made this announcement during an interaction with journalists on March 29 at the proposed site for the Bolgatanga airport.

He emphasised that the construction of the Bolgatanga Airport would play a vital role in facilitating the transportation of mined minerals, particularly gold, to other parts of the country.

This, he explained, would help reduce challenges such as armed robberies that miners and gold buyers face when transporting their products.

Atanga also urged stakeholders to support the establishment of the airport to improve business opportunities in the region.

“With the discovery of minerals, there’s business to do. And when they mine, they need faster means to send their gold to the national level without disruptions,” he said.

He further highlighted that the Upper East Region’s strategic location, a gateway to Burkina Faso and Togo, makes the proposed airport even more important for economic growth.
