GJA condemns dismissal of Ahmed Suale case

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has voiced strong disapproval following the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue prosecution in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

The move led to the discharge of the lead suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, by the Madina District Court.

Ahmed Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI team, was shot and killed in Madina in 2019, a crime that shook the nation and drew international condemnation.

His death became a symbol of the risks journalists face in the pursuit of truth.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour described the decision to drop the case as “a grave blot on Ghana’s record as a democracy that prides itself on the rule of law and freedom of expression”.

He warned that such actions could erode public trust in the justice system and embolden those who threaten press freedom.

The GJA is demanding accountability. It has called for a full explanation from the Attorney-General’s Department, an update from the Inspector-General of Police, and direct intervention from the President to ensure justice is served.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, who had been charged with abetment of crime and murder, was accused of leading two other suspects, still at large, to Ahmed Suale’s residence, where the journalist was later killed.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.

In court, prosecutors revealed that the Attorney-General had directed them to discontinue the case due to insufficient evidence.

Although call records placed Koranteng near the scene, the Attorney-General concluded that this alone did not meet the threshold for prosecution.

Additionally, police sketches of the assailants reportedly did not match Koranteng’s description.

The Attorney-General has advised police to intensify efforts to locate the two remaining suspects, stressing that the evidence against Koranteng was not strong enough to proceed.
