GIS suspends six officers over viral misconduct video

The Ghana Immigration Service has suspended six of its officers after a video showing them in a heated confrontation with a senior officer sparked widespread concern on social media.

The footage, which has been circulating since late November, captured the officers exchanging harsh words with a man who identified himself as a Deputy Commissioner of Immigration while he was travelling in a commercial vehicle.

According to the Service, the incident occurred on November 25, 2025, at the Offinso Inland Checkpoint, where the officers were carrying out their routine duties.

The video showed behaviour that the Service described as disrespectful and far below the standard expected of its personnel.

Officials said the actions seen in the recording breach the Ghana Immigration Service Code of Conduct and tarnish the image of an institution that depends on order and discipline.

The Comptroller General of Immigration reminded the public that the Service expects its officers to uphold values such as integrity and respect at all times. “We take this matter seriously because our officers must always reflect the principles that guide our work,” he said.

The Service has begun a full investigation, which will follow the procedures set out in the Ghana Immigration Service Regulations 2016 L I 2245. Depending on the outcome, the officers could face further disciplinary action.

In its statement, the Service apologised to the public for any discomfort caused by the incident.

It assured Ghanaians that it remains committed to strengthening professionalism and accountability across the institution.

The Service also promised to provide updates once the investigation is complete, adding that maintaining public trust is a responsibility it does not take lightly.
