President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will offer 1,000 scholarships to students from across ECOWAS member states to pursue tertiary education in Ghanaian universities.
The announcement was made during the official launch of the ECOWAS@50 celebrations held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Tuesday, April 22.
Mr Mahama said the initiative forms part of Ghana’s commitment to deepening regional integration and accelerating development through education and youth empowerment.
“To mark this milestone and strengthen our regional bonds, Ghana is offering 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students across the sub-region to study in our universities,” he declared.
He stressed that the initiative goes beyond financial support, describing it as a powerful symbol of unity and cooperation within West Africa.
“This is not just a gesture, it is an act of solidarity. It is a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners, but as partners,” he added.
The event brought together leaders and dignitaries from across the West African region, who gathered in Accra to celebrate ECOWAS’s achievements over the past five decades and to outline a renewed vision for peace, security, and shared prosperity.
As part of the celebration, the official logo for ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary was also unveiled.
