The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has published the names of some 43 professional bodies in Ghana that are not in good standing.
This follows their failure to comply with the initial June 30 deadline to update their records.
The professional bodies were required to file their annual returns and update their Certificate of Membership by June 30, 2024, as stipulated in Section 16 of the Professional Bodies Registration Act, 1973 (NRCD 143).
However, despite the initial deadline of June 30, many professional bodies have failed to comply as of July 31.
As a result, the ORC extended the deadline to December 30, 2024.
The ORC’s validation of the register post-deadline reveals that 40 professional bodies are in good standing, 43 professional bodies are not in good standing, and 11 professional bodies are newly registered.
73 professional bodies have no contact numbers for record updates whilst 4 professional bodies have requested deregistration due to gaining Chartered status by an Act of Parliament.
Among those not in good standing are prominent organizations such as the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Chartered Institute of Bankers (Ghana), the Ghana Institute of Taxation, and the Ghana Bar Association.
Conversely, the Ghana Institute of Planners, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana are in good standing.
Professional bodies seeking deregistration due to chartered status include the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana), the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana, the Ghana Medical Association (yet to submit a dissolution letter), and the Ghana Institute for Pure and Applied Chemistry.
The ORC has urged all defaulting professional bodies to comply by December 30, 2024, with Compliance including filing audited accounts, updating membership list, and any constitutional changes.
