Firefighters contain late-night fire at Mallam Atta market in Accra
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have successfully contained a fire outbreak at the Mallam Atta Market in Accra on Wednesday night, November 12, 2025, preventing what could have been a major disaster.
According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at 10:46 p.m. The first fire engine, dispatched from the National Headquarters and led by ADO I Ahoni, arrived at the scene at 11:02 p.m.
Reinforcement teams from the Circle and Flagstaff House Fire Stations joined the operation at 11:13 p.m. and 11:29 p.m., respectively.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 12:01 a.m. and completely extinguished it at 12:24 a.m.
In total, twelve wooden structures where six serving as shops and six as residential units were destroyed.
A 40-foot container used as a cold store also suffered partial damage.
Despite the losses, GNFS officials said the quick and coordinated response of the firefighting teams prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
