The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken another disciplinary turn after FIFA sanctioned both the Nigeria national football team and the DR Congo national football team for incidents involving supporter misconduct during their playoff clash on November 16th, 2025.
In a statement released by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs (CHF) after their supporters were found guilty of throwing objects onto the pitch during the high-stakes encounter. While no injuries were reported, FIFA deemed the act a breach of stadium safety regulations.
DR Congo, however, received a heavier sanction, with a fine of 5,000 CHF imposed over the use of laser pointers by fans. The act is considered a serious violation under FIFA’s security codes, as it can endanger players and officials by causing distraction or temporary visual impairment.
The match itself was fiercely contested, reflecting the growing intensity of African qualification campaigns. DR Congo emerged victorious from the encounter, securing progression to the next stage and boosting their hopes of returning to the global stage.
FIFA reiterated its firm stance on fan behavior, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy toward any form of misconduct that threatens the safety and integrity of the game. The governing body has, in recent years, increased surveillance and enforcement measures across international fixtures to curb such incidents.
