Fake soldier arrested in Bolgatanga over recruitment scam

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Bolgatanga for allegedly posing as a military officer, defrauding individuals seeking recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces.

The suspect, named Jeffery Solomon Darko, was detained by operatives from the 11 Mechanised Battalion around 2:00 PM on April 16, 2025, after receiving intelligence about his activities.

He was apprehended following an attempt to recruit a victim under false pretenses.

Reports indicate that Darko presented himself as a Warrant Officer Class One from the 3rd Infantry Battalion and demanded a payment of 150 US dollars, or its equivalent in cedis, to “facilitate” the recruitment process.

One victim reportedly paid GH₵1,000 before realising the deceit.

Upon his arrest, authorities discovered Darko in possession of two smartphones and the GH₵1,000 he had allegedly taken from the victim.

He has been transferred to the Bolgatanga District Police along with the recovered items for further investigation and potential prosecution.

The Ghana Armed Forces is urging the public to remain vigilant and refrain from engaging with anyone offering military recruitment outside of official channels.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest military or police authority.
