The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that it has expunged 15,000 names of minors and foreigners from the voters’ register.
Speaking to the media at the EC’s head office on Thursday, August 17 the chairperson of EC, Jean Mensa disclosed that these names entered the register through the guarantor system during the 2020 registration exercise.
“Our experience from the 2020 registration exercise showed that several minors and foreigners using the window of the guarantor system found their way into our roll.
“To rid the register of minors and foreigners in 2020, the EC established the District Registration Review Committees which worked for several weeks to delete the names of minors and foreigners from the register. We managed to expunge some 15,000 minors and foreigners from the register,” she said.
She added that during the registration, some 40,000 minors and foreigners were also challenged.
She emphasized that the intention to adopt the Ghana Card as the sole proof for voter registration is not aimed at disenfranchising Ghanaians.
She argued that the proposed CI currently before Parliament was inspired by the determination to “conduct credible, transparent, fair and peaceful elections,” which was borne out of the flaws the Commission encountered during the registration period in 2020.
