DVLA rolls out 24-hour centres to clear licence backlog

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has moved to tackle a backlog of more than 440,000 pending driver’s licence applications by introducing round-the-clock processing centres across the country.

According to the Authority, the inherited backlog created serious operational delays and raised security concerns about the potential circulation of fake licences.

In response, management established a centralised 24-hour processing centre to speed up issuance and strengthen safeguards within the system.

Director of Corporate Affairs, Stephen Attuh, said in an interview on Friday, February 13, that the intervention has already cleared about 400,000 of the pending applications.

Despite the progress, some applicants say they have been waiting for their licences since 2023, expressing frustration over the long delays.

To ease pressure further, the DVLA has expanded its 24-hour operations with a new centre at Adenta. Similar services are also running at the ports in Takoradi and Tema to help reduce congestion and improve turnaround times.

Mr Attuh noted that the long-term plan is to operate regional offices 24 hours a day.

Where that is not immediately feasible, offices are running extended two-shift systems, with full expansion expected as demand grows.
