DVLA denies plans to post staff abroad for licence services

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has dismissed reports suggesting that its staff will be deployed to foreign embassies to provide driver licensing services.

In a statement dated February 26, 2026, the Authority said the new initiative does not involve sending domestic officers abroad.

“This operation does not in any way mean that the DVLA would post its domestic staff to work at Embassies in the aforementioned countries as the news headlines sought to portray,” the statement said.

According to the DVLA, the programme is being rolled out in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support Ghanaians living abroad.

The initial phase targets five countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Under the arrangement, embassy staff in these countries will be trained to verify and receive applications for International Driver’s Permits and driver’s licence renewals.

The verified documents will then be forwarded to the DVLA headquarters in Ghana for processing, after which completed documents will be returned to the embassies for collection by applicants.

The clarification follows remarks by the DVLA Chief Executive, Julius Neequaye Kotey, during the commissioning of a new office in Bantama, Kumasi, on February 25, 2026.

“Some of you, the DVLA staff, are travelling overseas to go and provide services in five countries outside,” he said, adding that approval had been secured to support Ghanaians abroad so they would not need to travel home to renew expired licences.

Management says the system is structured as a back-end processing arrangement rather than a physical staff deployment.
