The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has filed a complaint at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) against the Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

This comes after a video showed the MP and her team giving out food to voters in a queue during the special voting held on December 2, 2024, at the Legon Police Station polling centre.

The incident sparked public debate about voter influence and electoral ethics.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, December 3, Mr Dumelo said the complaint entails video recordings of various conducts which he believes breach our criminal and electoral laws.

“My team also gave material information on plots by MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN to unlawfully influence voters on a larger scale come Saturday, December 7, 2024, when the main election will be held.

“We expect the OSP to take immediate and decisive steps to not only prevent MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN from repeating the unlawful behaviour but also to bring her and all her accomplices to book,” he said.

He added that how the OSP handles the complaint from now to Friday, December 6, will determine the quality of the December 7 elections.

Meanwhile, Ms Alhassan has said the food and water were based on request.

In an interview, she dismissed allegations of malicious intent, stating that her actions were purely driven by compassion.

She explained that personnel in the queue asked for water. Her women’s organiser provided the water, and observing others in need, the MP extended the gesture to those who appeared tired or hungry.

“I thought that there were some people who would need food after I have served my people, and so I decided to give it [the food] to them [the people in queue]. Did you see me giving out food to the people in the queue? The lady with me received a request for water, and in her attempt to give it to the person who requested it, she ended up giving it to two other people who also needed water,” she said.
