Cyber fraud hits GH₵4.4m in Q1 2025

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised serious concerns over the alarming rise in online fraud, with financial losses soaring to GH₵4.4 million between January and March 2025.

This marks a staggering increase from the GH₵2.4 million recorded in the same period last year.

According to the CSA, 350 cases of cyber fraud have already been reported this year, as scammers continue to exploit digital platforms to deceive unsuspecting victims.

With ongoing Eid celebrations and the upcoming Easter festivities, the CSA warns that cybercriminals are taking advantage of the increased online shopping and financial transactions during this period.

Fraudsters are using deceptive tactics such as fake online shops, brand impersonation, and phishing scams. Many victims have fallen prey to counterfeit e-commerce platforms and social media pages that promise irresistible discounts but fail to deliver any products.

Others have been tricked into engaging with fraudulent business listings manipulated by scammers, only to be blocked after making payments.

Phishing scams, where criminals send deceptive emails and messages posing as businesses or even romantic partners, have also become increasingly common, often leading to stolen personal data or financial losses.

To help protect consumers, the CSA advises extra caution when making online transactions.

Ghanaians are urged to verify the authenticity of online retailers, avoid making advance payments, and be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true.

Sensitive personal information, including Ghana Card details and bank account credentials, should never be shared with unverified sources.

The CSA is calling on the public to report any suspected cyber fraud incidents through its 24-hour helpline by calling or texting 292, sending a WhatsApp message to 0501603111, or emailing report@csa.gov.gh. Issued on March 28, 2025, this warning highlights the urgent need for increased vigilance as cybercrime continues to escalate in Ghana.
