The Director of Legal Affairs of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako, has raised concerns about the decision by Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
Mr Nimako believes the Speaker should have “hastened slowly” when addressing the contentious issue surrounding four parliamentary seats.
This conflict intensified after Speaker Bagbin ruled that certain seats were vacant—a decision that has been stayed by the Supreme Court, creating friction between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NDC claims to hold the majority in Parliament, a stance that the NPP disputes.
Commenting on the development, Mr Nimako criticized Speaker Bagbin for not taking time to carefully navigate this complex situation before passing judgment.
He pointed out that declaring seats vacant could significantly impact parliamentary operations and the democratic process.
As tensions rise, the NDC has stated it will disregard the Supreme Court’s stay order and continue to assert its majority status, further complicating the parliamentary landscape.
He urged all parties to approach the matter with responsibility and urgency to avoid further escalation.
“We are all in this dilemma now because of the Speaker. He should have hastened slowly. In fact, he knew the processes that Afenyo-Markin had filed which was brought to his notice and he even confirmed that he should have hastened slowly to avoid all these issues that we are having now,” he stated on Joy News on October 26.
