Court remands 59 suspected Volta secessionists

The Ghana Police Service says 59 suspects, including two females, have been remanded by the court since the first attack in the Volta Region on Friday, September 25, by secessionists.

Meanwhile, one person who was on the police wanted list over his alleged role in the attack on the Aveyime Police Station has also been arrested.

According to the police, Bessah Kpexor Israel was arrested at Adzasika near Mafi Kumase in the Volta Region on October 5.

The suspect led Police to a bush where he dug out firearms and ammunition he had buried in the grounds and handed same to Police. These included police-owned firearms and ammunition.

This follows a simultaneous attack launched by a secessionist group on two Police stations in Aveyime and Mepe as part of their activities to claim parts of the Volta Region as Western Togoland.

Another group suspected to be members of the secessionist group attacked the Ho STC yard and burnt two out of 11 buses parked in the yard.

The group of armed men also beat drivers at the bus terminal and left behind a flag of the breakaway group at the scene.

The police have, however, called for calm assuring the public they are dealing with the situation to bring the perpetrators to book.

Many groups and individuals, including President Akufo-Addo have condemned the violence exhibited by the group.

The government will deal with secessionists

In his first remarks on the disturbances by the group, President Akufo-Addo vowed to deal with separatists in the Volta Region seeking to secede from Ghana.

He further assured that the security agencies were working assiduously to clamp down on the activities of the secessionists.

“Institutions are in place, the security agencies are doing their work, they’ve started already, and we’ll see results.

“What’s happening in the Volta Region is just by a handful of people. These secessionists. We will deal with them. I have no doubt about it,” the President said.

Commenting on the recent development, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said “The area, today, being described as Western Togoland must be a figment of your imagination. It does not exist”.

Dr Bawumia insisted that the Mamprusis, Gonjas, the people of the Oti Region “are part of Ghana and they have not expressed interest in going anywhere”.

He, therefore, questioned the geographical location of the supposed Western Togoland.

For him, “there is no legal basis” for the demands.
