The Accra High Court has issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The directive comes after the CID boss failed to appear before the court on contempt charges.
The court also issued an arrest warrant for the Director General of the Legal and Prosecution Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
The duo are respondents in a case filed by Sureword Global Outreach, seeking an order to release a vehicle they had impounded, with registration number GN 2925-20.
The court had specifically ordered the IGP to request the Director General of the CID and the Director General of the Legal and Prosecution of the Ghana Police Service to appear before the court on Monday morning.
Despite the court’s orders, the respondents repeatedly failed to appear before the court, leading to the issuance of the bench warrant.
When the case was called on Monday, April 15, 2024, counsel for the applicant, Abraham Arthur, moved an application for committal of contempt.
Counsel submitted that “the orders have been carried out, but the respondents are not in court.”
After listening to the counsel’s plea, the court, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, said it had extended enough courtesy to the respondents.
The court stressed that nobody is above the law of Ghana before issuing the arrest warrant.
“This court has extended enough courtesy to these public officers, and since nobody is above the law, I hereby issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the respondents,” said the court.
