Court halts common registration exam for 792 newly trained doctors

The Human Rights Court 2 of the High Court in Accra has issued an interim injunction stopping the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) from requiring 792 newly trained medical doctors to pass the Stage 1 Common Registration Examination (CRE) before obtaining provisional registration.

The order also restrains the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Health from enforcing the requirement pending the determination of the substantive case and an injunction application filed by the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations (FGMSA) and the affected students.

In a statement dated Wednesday, October 21, 2026, FGMSA said the ruling suspends the examination, which was scheduled for Thursday, October 22.

The examination was a compulsory requirement for the affected doctors to obtain provisional registration and begin their housemanship.

The federation has urged all parties involved to comply with the court’s directive while the legal proceedings continue.

It said decisions affecting the professional careers of graduating medical and dental students must be guided by the law, fairness and due process.

FGMSA also expressed appreciation to its legal team, the affected graduating classes, and medical and dental students for their support throughout the process.

The federation said it would provide further updates through its official communication channels as the case progresses.
