Chief Imam urges Ghanaians to protect environment as Eid is marked

The Office of the National Chief Imam has called on Ghanaians to grow stronger in their faith and also take better care of the environment as Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.

In a message shared at the end of Ramadan, the Office, speaking on behalf of Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, congratulated Muslims in Ghana and around the world for their dedication, sacrifice, and prayers during the holy month.

The statement said Eid-ul-Fitr is not just a time for celebration, but also a time to reflect and take responsibility for our actions.

A key part of the message focused on protecting the environment, under the theme “Our Earth, Our Future”.

The Office explained that caring for the environment is not just a social duty, but also a religious one, as taught in the Qur’an.

It reminded people that the earth and its resources are a gift from Allah, and humans are responsible for taking care of them. Everyone was encouraged to use natural resources wisely and avoid waste.

However, the Office expressed concern about the damage being done to the environment, saying many of the problems we face today are caused by human actions.

It pointed to issues like illegal mining (galamsey), deforestation, and uncontrolled sand winning, which are destroying water bodies and harming the ecosystem.

The message also spoke against wasteful living, reminding people that Islam teaches moderation and responsible use of resources.

The Office called on everyone—citizens, religious leaders, and community groups—to take action in protecting the environment. Mosques and Islamic organisations were especially encouraged to educate people and lead by example.

It also stressed that true faith should be seen in how people live their daily lives, including how they treat the environment.

Beyond environmental issues, the Office prayed for peace in troubled parts of the world, especially in the Middle East, and encouraged unity and compassion among Muslims.

The message ended with prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in Ghana as Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
