CETAG declares another indefinite strike

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared another indefinite strike after the government failed to address longstanding grievances.

The strike is effective Thursday, January January 2, 2025.

This follows an Emergency National Council meeting on Monday, December 30, 2024.

A statement by the association explained that despite multiple engagements and arbitration awards, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has failed to address its concerns.

Their concerns include delays in the implementation of staff migration and compensation for all-year-round work

CETAG said efforts to resolve the issues through dialogue had proven futile, leaving them with no choice but to take this drastic step.

“The National Council of CETAG wishes to state unequivocally that members of the union shall not under any circumstance return to the colleges to undertake any official duties including teaching, and supervision of project work and macro-teaching, until the last pesewa is paid into our accounts. This declaration of an indefinite strike action is in accordance with section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651),” the statement read.

In August 2024, the group called off another strike that lasted over four weeks following the government’s and NLC’s assurances to address their issues.

According to the President of CETAG, Maxwell Bunu, the government has however remained unresponsive after their previous strike.

“It’s been four months since the strike was called off on August 20, 2024, and all the employer has done is continuously deceive our members with letters, verbal assurances, and supposed incessant correction of errors in the audited staff data for migration onto the University Pay Structure, while the Vice President’s office remains completely silent on the issue,” he stated.

This strike action is likely to disrupt academic activities across all colleges of education.
