The National Sports Authority (NSA) has denied reports that the Borteyman Sports Complex was rented out for a church service.
In a statement dated June 25, 2024, the Venue Manager, Majeed Bawa, said the reports were surprising and unfortunate while clarifying the situation.
He said the event was a special visit by students from the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies, Valley View University, and other institutions.
“The SRCs intended to tour the facilities at the venue. A church was supposed to provide transportation for the students, and subsequently, a deputy minister was scheduled to give them a lecture on leadership.
“Therefore, they were granted access to the hall for this purpose,” he explained.
He said he noticed a church banner in the hall, which they explained was a result of the church’s role in facilitating transportation.
“It is important to note that there were many Muslim students in attendance, some of whom were wearing hijabs. It is, therefore, surprising and unfortunate that stories have emerged suggesting the facility was handed out for a church programme,” he said.
He also apologised for the confusion the “misreport” may have caused and assured the public that the Borteyman Sports Complex remains a facility dedicated to serving the diverse needs of the community.
This raised concerns about the proper upkeep and management of the facility.
