A senior campaign aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Sammi Awuku, has revealed that the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will soon announce his running mate for the December polls.
According to him, Dr Bawumia has already settled on his running mate, suggesting an imminent announcement.
Mr Awuku’s comments come amidst speculations within the NPP and among political analysts over the seeming delay in naming a running mate.
The delay has sparked discussions about potential candidates and the implications for the party’s electoral prospects.

However, Mr Awuku emphasized that Dr Bawumia remains within a suitable time frame for announcing his running mate.
“We are very much within the timeline. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines.
“It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that,” Mr Awuku stated on Onua FM.
On November 4, 2023, Vice President Dr Bawumia clinched the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer position, setting the stage for the upcoming December polls.
While Dr Bawumia has yet to officially unveil his running mate for the impending elections, analysts have been busy speculating on potential candidates.
Among those frequently mentioned are the Minister for Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister for Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, and the esteemed clergyman and former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah.
Additionally, Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei Opare and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekulful have emerged as notable contenders in the running mate selection process for Dr Bawumia.
