The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has assumed temporary custody of a newborn baby discovered abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina, located in the Central Region.
The Ministry assures the public that the child is in stable condition and is receiving necessary medical care.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry indicated that the baby, estimated to be approximately one day old at the time of her discovery, is currently under medical supervision and is responding positively to treatment.
“Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety,” the statement stressed.
Simultaneously, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, has initiated investigations to identify and locate the mother or any close relatives of the infant.
The Ministry underscored that the overall well-being of the infant remains its highest priority, noting that arrangements have been established to ensure she is adequately cared for while investigations are ongoing.
The Gender Ministry also praised the residents who rescued the baby and encouraged members of the public with pertinent information to assist with the ongoing investigations.
Furthermore, the Ministry urged parents or guardians facing difficulties, especially in situations involving unplanned or crisis pregnancies, to seek assistance through appropriate social welfare services instead of resorting to abandonment.
It also encouraged the public to utilise its Helpline of Hope Call Centre by calling the toll-free numbers 0800-800-800 and 0800-900-900 for counselling, guidance, or to report concerns regarding children and other vulnerable individuals.
“The Ministry emphasises that abandoning a child is a serious violation of their rights and remains committed to protecting the welfare of all children,” the statement concluded.
