Ms Agatha Abaidoo, the only independent female candidate in the upcoming Assin North by-election, has withdrawn from the race after filing her nomination forms.
This was announced by the Central Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Gladys Pinkrah, on Friday, June 16, 2023, in an update on the conclusion of the balloting.
The EC official did not give any reasons why Ms Abaidoo withdrew.
Mrs Pinkrah disclosed that the Assin North by-election scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023, will have three main contestants on the ballot papers, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Charles Opoku being the number one on the ballot paper, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate Bernice Enyonam Sefenu will occupy the second position on the ballot and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson will be the third candidate on the ballot paper.
“So as at the close of nominations, four people filed, but the name of the independent candidate who withdrew would not be part of the notice of nomination that will be issued,” the Central Regional Director of the EC noted.
The Electoral Commission has assured all party members contesting in the by-election that the process will be free, fair and transparent for the elected candidate to represent the Assin North Constituency in Parliament.
