Another building collapses in Cape Coast, claims one life
Another old building has collapsed in Cape Coast, causing one death and leaving another person hospitalised.
This incident occurred on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, in the Idun Amissekyir neighbourhood, where a residential structure crumbled, trapping two individuals beneath the debris.
The victims were swiftly taken to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, but a woman was pronounced dead later on, while a man continues to receive medical treatment.
This comes barely four days after a building collapsed at the London Bridge area in Cape Coast, following hours of heavy rainfall, leading to the death of two elderly people and others hospitalised.
This latest incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of the city’s ageing infrastructure.
Amidst these recurring incidents, Cape Coast South Member of Parliament, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, stressed the importance of preserving the city’s architectural heritage.
“These are ancient buildings that form part of the city’s identity. We must maintain and preserve them because of their historical value,” he said.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) George Justice Arthur, who visited the site, echoed the MP’s sentiment, agreeing that not all historic structures should face demolition.
Meanwhile, Mr. Arthur has confirmed that there are ongoing negotiations with the owners of the deteriorating buildings to explore possible demolitions for safety reasons.
He also revealed that all current demolition activities in Cape Coast have been temporarily suspended.
