Alonso explains Estevão’s omission after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup exit

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has explained why Brazilian winger Estevão Willian was left unused in the club’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, insisting the youngster will get his opportunities as the season progresses.

Chelsea were eliminated from the competition on Wednesday after losing on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Despite the absence of Cole Palmer through suspension and João Pedro through injury, Estevão remained on the bench throughout the encounter, prompting questions about his limited playing time.

Alonso said the intensity of the match and fitness concerns involving several players influenced his substitution decisions.

“The game had very intense moments and we knew it would be physical,” he said, explaining that Malo Gusto had suffered cramps.

The Chelsea manager added that the team had been forced to make changes because of those concerns, leaving limited opportunities to introduce the Brazilian forward.

Alonso acknowledged that Estevão would be disappointed with his lack of involvement but assured him that opportunities would come.

“I understand his situation and he could be happier for sure. He wants to play. I’m sure Este will have his moments. That’s my responsibility,” he said.
