All set for Mahama’s inauguration today
As Ghana prepares for the historic inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama today, January 7, 2025, strict protocols and security measures have been put in place to ensure the smooth and secure execution of the ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, a venue that holds significant historical importance in the country’s democratic milestones.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, has outlined the comprehensive preparations and security measures being implemented for the event.
Access to the Black Star Square will be restricted to invited guests only, with strict adherence to security protocols in place to safeguard the dignitaries and attendees.
Security Measures and Preparations
Extensive security preparations have been made at the Black Star Square, which will temporarily serve as the venue for the parliamentary enclave during the inauguration.
The Ministry of National Security has issued a temporary ban on all private drones within the vicinity of the ceremony to ensure the safety of the high-profile guests. This measure applies to both recreational and commercial drones, with no exceptions.
Acting Chief Director Lily Fati Soale highlighted that the drone ban is a precautionary step to maintain a secure environment during the event and to avoid any potential threats from unmanned aerial devices.
Other security precautions include a strict screening process at all access points to the venue.
Invitations have been distributed only to those who are authorised to attend, and attendees will be required to present valid invitation cards before gaining access to the event area.
Guest and foreign dignitaries
“So far, 10 heads of state have confirmed their participation” in the inauguration, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye revealed.
In addition, the event will host two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, two former presidents, and several heads of international organisations, including representatives from the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kenyan President William Ruto, as well as delegations from the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom, have issued public statements to confirm their attendance.
Event Schedule and Protocols
The inauguration ceremony is set to commence promptly at 8:30 a.m., with guests expected to be seated in advance.
The seating arrangements are organised to ensure that dignitaries, legislators, and other notable attendees are accommodated with the highest level of protocol.
The Speaker of Parliament will arrive first and then escort the President-elect and Vice-President-elect to the parliamentary chamber for the formal proceedings, which are set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
A key feature of the inauguration is the formal swearing-in of the president-elect and the vice president-elect, an event that underscores Ghana’s commitment to democratic processes and peaceful transitions of power.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasised the importance of following all event protocols, noting that the success of the ceremony relies on everyone adhering to the established procedures.
Only guests with valid credentials will be allowed in the swearing-in area, which will be closely monitored by security personnel.
The event will be conducted with the utmost professionalism, ensuring that the smooth flow of activities is maintained throughout the day.
Traffic Management and Parking Arrangements
To manage the large crowds expected at the event and facilitate smooth movement around the venue, traffic diversions and road closures will be in effect on the day of the inauguration.
Several major roads surrounding Black Star Square will be closed temporarily, including:
- 28th February Road: From CEPS Headquarters to the Castle Road Junction
- Castle Road: From AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Starlet 91 Road: Adjacent to Black Star Square
Additionally, traffic from La, Labone, and Osu will be diverted to alternate routes such as Salem Avenue and Oxford Street.
Public and private vehicles are being urged to use these diversions to avoid congestion and facilitate access to the event.
For those attending, designated parking areas have been arranged to ensure organised parking and to avoid roadblocks. These parking lots include:
- Back of the Independence Arch
- Forecourt of the State House
- Access Bank Car Park
- Ministries Area and other designated parking spaces
“No vehicles will be allowed to park in unauthorised areas or attempt to pass through the designated roadblocks,” reiterated Mr. Kwakye Ofosu.
The organisers are keen on ensuring that all traffic regulations are followed, and they are urging attendees to comply with these measures to ensure the event runs smoothly.
