Traders at the Accra Central Business District have described a stampede that occurred on Monday, December 22, after heavy Christmas shopping created severe congestion at the market, causing panic and distress among shoppers.

According to the traders, the incident happened as large crowds rushed to buy food items and other essential goods ahead of the festive season.

The overwhelming human traffic led to confusion and fear, resulting in several people collapsing, including a pregnant woman.

They further explained that the chaos caused some shoppers, including children, to lose their mobile phones and money.

The situation nearly turned tragic before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived and helped restore calm by spraying water to ease tension and disperse the crowd.

Accra Central Market is one of the busiest commercial centres in the capital, particularly during the Christmas period, when thousands of people visit daily to prepare for the celebrations.
