Afenyo-Markin raises red flags over gov’t policies

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticised the government’s approach to social interventions and taxation, describing it as lacking coherence and raising concerns about policy consistency.

Speaking to the media during a parliamentary leadership briefing ahead of the resumption of Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that several government programmes were already facing challenges by the end of 2025.

He said this highlighted the need for a more coordinated and well-defined economic and social policy framework.

He further argued that, despite strong criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition, there has been little evidence of substantial change nearly a year into the current administration.

“Apart from the GoldBod, which has helped stabilise the cedi, in other sectors like agriculture, there hasn’t been any major improvement. Even flagship programmes such as the 24-Hour Economy have yet to show substantial results,” he said.

The Minority Leader urged the government to implement a clear and comprehensive policy direction, particularly on taxation and economic growth, to deliver tangible benefits across key sectors.

“We believe the government’s approach to social interventions and taxation has been incoherent. By the end of 2025, certain programmes were struggling, and while the NDC has condemned some of our government’s stance in the past, nearly a year in office, we have not seen a major shift in governance,” he added.
