Accra Minister warns MMDAs over sanitation and misconduct

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued a strong warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) over growing concerns about poor sanitation and a lack of discipline in local governance.

During an accountability session with MMDCEs and their management teams, the Minister expressed frustration with the state of sanitation in the capital.

She said the situation is unacceptable and blamed poor leadership and weak enforcement at the assembly level.

“Sanitation in Accra is very poor. The era of excuses is over,” she stated firmly.

She warned that persistent failure could lead to consequences, including leadership changes within underperforming assemblies.

To address safety and infrastructure gaps, the Minister announced the distribution of 3,000 new streetlights, with each MMDA receiving 100.

She gave a two-week deadline for the installation of these lights to improve public safety and visibility at night.

The Minister also raised concerns about lapses in administrative conduct.

She directed that personal assistants must not approve official documents or represent officials at events, calling for strict adherence to professional boundaries.

Ocloo criticised the growing politicisation of local government, urging MMDAs to stop turning public offices into political spaces.

She reminded attendees that only authorised individuals should attend meetings at the Regional Coordinating Council, referencing a recent breach involving a named official.

Finally, she revealed that more demolitions are planned to reclaim public lands and restore order in the region.
