A/R: Police arrest 40 in dawn swoops on criminal hideout

The Obuasi Police Command has arrested 40 people following coordinated early-morning operations in areas suspected to be hideouts for criminals and drug traffickers within Obuasi and its neighbouring communities.

The operation, which took place on Monday, December 16, 2025, occurred between 5:00 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. and was spearheaded by ASP Adam Muakalu, with officers from the Divisional Operations Unit, Obuasi District, and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) Obuasi Base participating.

As per a police situation report, the initiative focused on several locations, including Bedieso, Kunka Junction, Abompe, and Akaporiso, all suburbs of Obuasi.

At Bedieso, eight individuals were apprehended, with police recovering dried leaves believed to be cannabis from a black polythene bag located behind the area where the suspects were detained.

The team subsequently proceeded to Kunka Junction, where one suspect was discovered with a wrapped package of dried leaves thought to be cannabis. Eleven additional suspects, who attempted to escape upon noticing the police, were captured after officers successfully rounded them up.

At Abompe, the police arrested numerous suspects who were reportedly smoking in a ghetto. Among the items confiscated were two bottles of alcohol suspected to have been infused with cannabis.

The operation was further extended to Akaporiso, near Obuasi, where police recovered another quantity of dried leaves believed to be cannabis from a suspect. Additional arrests occurred behind an uncompleted building, where suspects were allegedly smoking and consuming alcohol.

Officers also confiscated a pack of tramadol during the operation.

In total, 40 suspects have been arrested and are presently in police custody, aiding in ongoing investigations. All seized items are being held at the station for forensic analysis.

Authorities indicate that suspects found in possession of illegal substances will be brought before the court at the earliest opportunity.

Detective Chief Inspector Odoom Stephen from the District Criminal Investigations Department (DCID) in Obuasi assured the public that sustained operations will continue to combat criminal activities and enhance safety within the municipality.
