AMA removes rebuilt structures at Kofikrom after devastating fire

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has removed unauthorised makeshift structures being rebuilt at Kofikrom, a squatter settlement in Avenor within the North Industrial Area, to pave the way for a planned housing redevelopment project.

The operation, led by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, involved security personnel and the AMA Task Force. It follows a devastating fire outbreak in the community that destroyed properties.

The structures, largely made of wooden posts, beams and planks, were being reconstructed despite earlier directives against rebuilding temporary shelters at the site.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr Allotey expressed disappointment over the decision by some residents to disregard the directives, particularly when plans were underway to provide permanent block buildings.

He warned residents against erecting new unauthorised wooden structures, stressing that the Assembly would not permit their reconstruction in an area previously affected by a deadly fire.

The Mayor said contractors had already been deployed to the site to undertake measurements and other preliminary activities ahead of construction.

According to him, the redevelopment project will include permanent housing, electricity, borehole water supply and streetlights, which he said would be provided free of charge to residents.

A tarred one-way access road will also be constructed to improve movement within the community and ensure easier access for emergency services.
