GTEC shuts down Royal Nursing College over accreditation breach

The Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) has shut down Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nyhiaeso in the Ashanti Region after the school’s management reportedly failed to produce documents confirming its accreditation status.

GTEC stated that the college does not hold accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and also disregarded a directive issued in June 2024, ordering it to cease admitting new students.

The institution, which reportedly has more than 800 students, is said to have been operating without proper registration with the relevant regulatory bodies.

This has raised serious concerns about how its programmes were being run and whether academic standards were being met.

Officials from GTEC inspected the campus on Thursday, February 19.

After about an hour of assessment, they announced the immediate closure of the school, stating that the decision was necessary to protect students and ensure compliance with educational regulations.

The Council said steps would be taken to transfer affected students to accredited institutions. Special arrangements are also expected to help final-year students complete their studies.

The closure left many students shocked and distressed, with some seen in tears on campus. Several said they had recently paid their fees and expressed frustration over the sudden disruption to their education.

Meanwhile, the wife of the school’s owner and some members of management were picked up by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, who accompanied GTEC officials during the operation.
