Artisans at the Wa Magazine in the Upper West Region have appealed to the Wa Municipal Assembly to construct gutters to address the persistent flooding at the facility.
The artisans say their workshops are regularly flooded during heavy rainfall because of the poor drainage system. They fear the situation is damaging their equipment, tools and materials while also affecting their ability to work.
Chairman of the Artisans Association, Umaru Nurrideen, said the flooding had become a major challenge, particularly during the rainy season.
He explained that rainwater flows directly into some workshops, causing damage to valuable working tools and disrupting business activities.
“The poor drainage system here is affecting our work, especially when it rains water run into our shops and spoil our working tools,” he said.
Another artisan, Yakubu Siedu, said the situation was particularly dangerous for welders who work with electricity.
He explained that whenever it rains heavily, he is forced to close his workshop because the combination of water and electricity poses a serious safety risk.
“When it rains I have to close my shop and go home because the rainwater has nowhere to pass than my shop,” he said.
According to him, the frequent closure of his workshop leads to lost working hours and income.
The Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Nurah Danwannah, said the Assembly was aware of the concerns raised by the artisans and would take steps to address the drainage problem.
The artisans are therefore calling for the construction of proper gutters and other drainage facilities around the Magazine.
They believe improved drainage will prevent rainwater from entering their workshops, protect their equipment and create safer working conditions.
