The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to retract what it describes as partisan political comments and an alleged commitment to ensuring the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda.
The party says the Chief Justice should resign and formally join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if he is unwilling to withdraw the comments.
The demand follows a video circulating publicly in which, according to the NPP, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie made comparative remarks suggesting that the current NDC government and its appointed chief executives are performing better than the previous NPP administration.
In the video, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is heard saying, “Sometimes when we hear how well some state organisations are doing now, we wonder what we really have been doing in the past eight years.”
In a statement issued on September 3, 2026, and signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party described the remarks as inappropriate for the head of Ghana’s Judiciary.
The NPP said the Chief Justice, as head of an independent arm of government, is expected to remain politically neutral and uphold his judicial oath to administer justice without fear, favour, affection or ill will.
The party also raised concerns about what it described as the Chief Justice’s frequent presence at events involving political appointees of the current government, arguing that such appearances could weaken public confidence in the Judiciary’s neutrality.
It further questioned the Chief Justice’s reported commitment to doing everything possible to ensure the success of the President’s agenda, particularly at a time when some individuals associated with the NPP are facing prosecution under the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
“A Chief Justice swears a single oath, and it is to the Constitution: to no President, no party and no agenda,” the party stated.
The NPP also alleged that the Judiciary under the current Chief Justice has shown bias against opposition figures.
It cited what it called the “extraordinary alacrity” with which vacation warrants have been issued in cases involving NPP members.
