Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have emerged as contenders for the signing of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch international attracting strong interest as the summer transfer window approaches its deadline.
Tottenham have been pursuing Gakpo for several weeks and are reported to have agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old.
The London club’s interest has now faced a new challenge after Manchester City made contact with the player’s representatives to discuss a possible move.
Manchester City’s interest comes after the club agreed to sell Brazilian winger Savinho to Tottenham. The transfer has been reported at an initial £75 million, potentially rising to £85 million with add-ons.
City are therefore looking at options to strengthen their attacking ranks, with Gakpo now among the players being considered.
Reports indicate that City have made contact with Gakpo’s camp, although there has not yet been a club-to-club agreement with Liverpool. Tottenham, meanwhile, remain actively involved in negotiations for the forward.
Liverpool’s position could be the biggest obstacle to either club completing the transfer. The Reds are reluctant to allow Gakpo to leave unless they first secure enough attacking reinforcements.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly keen to strengthen the wide areas, and the club has been pursuing Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola as a major target.
Liverpool have also shown interest in Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and PSG youngster Ibrahim Mbaye as they look to add more options to their attack.
Recent reports suggest Liverpool want to bring in two wingers before seriously considering Gakpo’s departure. This means the Dutchman’s future could depend heavily on the club’s success in completing its remaining transfer deals.
Gakpo, who remains under contract with Liverpool until 2030, has also made a strong start to the new campaign, scoring in the club’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
