Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has completed repair works on weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.
The maintenance exercise started on Thursday, August 6, 2026, and was completed on schedule despite some technical and operational challenges along the way.
Following the completion of the repairs, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
However, GWL says customers should not expect water supply to return to normal immediately. The company explained that water would gradually reach affected communities as the transmission lines and reservoirs are filled and the pressure in the system is restored.
“Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilises,” the company said in a statement.
GWL also clarified that the restart of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant does not mean that all affected communities will immediately have a continuous water supply.
The company said its Water Demand Management and rationing programme is still in place to help distribute the available water fairly among consumers.
“Customers are therefore encouraged to continue observing their usual rationing schedules,” GWL said, while asking customers to remain patient as the network is gradually recharged, reservoirs are refilled, and water pressure returns to normal.
The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, visited the work sites at different stages of the exercise.
He praised the engineers, contractors, maintenance workers and technical teams for their hard work and professionalism, which helped the repairs finish on time.
He specifically recognised the Lead and Chief Manager of ATMA Production, Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, as well as their teams, for their leadership and commitment during the exercise.
Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the repairs showed what could be achieved through teamwork, technical knowledge, good coordination and strong leadership.
He also thanked the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their support throughout the maintenance exercise.
According to Mr Mutawakilu, the ECG team worked closely with GWL staff, including during the night, to deal with important electrical and operational issues.
Their support helped make it possible for water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant to resume on time.
Mr Mutawakilu also expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field workers, support teams and other stakeholders who contributed to the repair works.
GWL also thanked customers and residents in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions for their patience and cooperation during the maintenance exercise.
The company assured the public that it was closely monitoring the transmission line as water supply gradually returned to affected areas.
Ghana Water Ltd said it would continue to focus on regular maintenance, upgrading its infrastructure and finding ways to improve water supply to customers.
