A four-year-old boy has been swept away by the River Adjei at Nurses Junction in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation.
The incident took place around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday when the child was accompanied by his two older siblings, aged seven and nine, on their way to visit their mother, who sells roasted corn at Nurses Junction.
As reported by an eyewitness, Habiba Armani, the children were traversing a bridge over the river when the four-year-old inadvertently stepped onto the sloping edge.
He lost his footing, fell into the rapidly flowing river, and was carried away by the powerful current before anyone could intervene.
Upon receiving the distressing news, the children’s mother hurried to the location and reportedly tried to leap into the river in a frantic attempt to save her son. However, bystanders at the scene held her back to avert another tragedy.
Community members and rescue teams promptly initiated a search for the missing child, but as of the time of this report, he had not yet been located.
Local traditional leaders have conducted customary rites, including the pouring of libation, as the search persists in hopes of finding the child.
