Two people have died and four others have been injured after a head-on collision between a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease on the Elubo-Takoradi Highway.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a statement on Friday, June 26, said the accident involved a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck with registration number GS 3789-24 and a Nigerian passenger bus bearing registration number AAA 449 YN (Lagos).

A rescue vehicle, DPT 465, carrying a team of five firefighters led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Clement Arthur, with Assistant Divisional Officer I Issifu Dauda Kaku, arrived at the accident scene at 11:59 a.m.

When the firefighters got there, they found five people trapped inside the passenger bus and one person trapped in the tipper truck.

The GNFS said members of the public had already managed to rescue three of the victims before the fire crew reached the scene.

The firefighters quickly began rescue operations to free the remaining victims. They gave them emergency care before taking the four injured people to the Elubo Government Hospital for treatment.

Sadly, the driver of the Nigerian passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene. The mate of the tipper truck also died later at the hospital while receiving treatment.

The bodies of the two deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue as investigations continue.

Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service indicate that the crash occurred after the driver of the passenger bus allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole on the highway, causing the vehicle to veer into the lane of the oncoming tipper truck, resulting in the head-on collision.
