University of Ghana retains spot as best in West Africa

The University of Ghana has once again emerged as the highest-ranked university in Ghana and West Africa, while also improving its standing among Africa’s top universities in the latest QS World University Rankings.

QS released the 2027 World University Rankings on June 18, 2026, after evaluating 1,504 universities across the globe. The assessment placed the University of Ghana among the 13 best universities in Africa.

This achievement reflects the university’s growing international recognition and the steady progress it has made in research, teaching, innovation, and graduate employability.

University officials attributed the strong performance to the successful implementation of the institution’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan.

The plan prioritises research excellence, student growth, strategic partnerships, and professional development for staff.

The university performed well across several important indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, international research collaboration, faculty-to-student ratio, and sustainability.

One of the institution’s most impressive results came in employment outcomes, where it earned a score of 93.2.

This score indicates that employers continue to value graduates from the university and trust the quality of skills and knowledge they bring to the workplace.

It also highlights the university’s commitment to preparing students for an increasingly competitive job market.

The university also recorded a score of 82.3 in the international research network category. This result demonstrates the strength of its global research partnerships and collaborative initiatives.

According to university management, the score reflects the institution’s growing role in generating knowledge and using research and innovation to tackle both local and global development challenges.

In the area of sustainability, the university achieved a score of 51.4. This performance recognises ongoing efforts to promote environmental responsibility, improve resource management, and strengthen long-term institutional resilience.

It also acknowledges the university’s contribution to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research, and community engagement.

Management thanked faculty members, staff, students, alumni, and partners for their support and contributions.

They described the achievement as the result of a shared commitment to enhancing the university’s reputation and influence on the global stage.

This latest recognition further strengthens the University of Ghana’s reputation as the country’s leading university and one of Africa’s premier centres of higher education.
