The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, and two other suspects in connection with the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, at Kwabenya in Accra.
The arrests follow ongoing investigations into the incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 21, at a residence linked to the late founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
According to a police statement, Akofena was arrested after reporting himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in response to an invitation by investigators. He was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further interrogation.
Police said a search conducted at his residence and on his vehicle at Kwabenya led to the discovery of a large quantity of ammunition and firearms.
“A search conducted on his vehicle and residence at Kwabenya led to the retrieval of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, additional loaded magazines and two Glock pistols, one of which is registered in his name,” the police stated.
Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects identified as Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.
The police indicated that all three suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
“The three suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations,” the statement added.
The latest arrests come after police earlier detained six private security guards alleged to have been directly involved in the shooting incident.
During that operation, investigators recovered five pump-action guns, a Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine containing five rounds of ammunition, and communication equipment believed to have been used by the security personnel.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the incident occurred during a ceremony at a residence in Kwabenya. Authorities say Adwoa Safo arrived at the premises and requested access but was allegedly denied entry.
Police further allege that armed private security personnel stationed at the residence discharged firearms during the confrontation, resulting in injuries to the former lawmaker and damage to her vehicle.
The former MP reportedly sustained injuries and received treatment at a medical facility. Her vehicle, which was found with multiple gunshot marks, has been retained by investigators for forensic examination.
Police say investigations remain ongoing and have assured the public that anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The suspects are expected to be processed for court as investigations continue.
