Two midwives facing trial for the alleged disappearance of a newborn baby at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga have been granted bail by the Tamale Circuit Court.
The defendants, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, appeared before Her Honour Afua Srakubea Agyeman-Darbu on charges of conspiracy to steal and abduction related to the missing baby case.
The court set bail for each accused at GH¢150,000, requiring two sureties. The judge also instructed that the sureties meet all necessary conditions before the accused can be released on bail.
The two healthcare professionals were arrested and charged following investigations into the newborn’s disappearance at the hospital.
This event has raised significant public concern both within the municipality and beyond.
According to the prosecution, initial investigations indicate that the accused may have been involved in the circumstances surrounding the infant’s disappearance.
However, the specifics of the prosecution’s evidence have yet to be fully disclosed in open court as the proceedings are ongoing.
The case has garnered considerable attention from residents and stakeholders, many of whom are advocating for a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the facts and ensure accountability for those responsible, if any.
The baby’s disappearance has incited public outrage and heightened concerns regarding safety and accountability in healthcare facilities, leading to calls for prompt action from law enforcement and health authorities.
Despite the charges against them, Frank Atanga and Mariam Mohammed remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
The court has postponed the case to July 9, 2026, when both accused are expected to return to continue the proceedings.
