Immigration Service repatriates 105 trafficking victims

The Ghana Immigration Service has successfully returned 105 foreign women and girls to their countries after uncovering a suspected human trafficking network in Asankragwa in the Western North Region.

The operation took place on May 20, 2026, following intelligence gathered by immigration officials.

Officers from the Asankragwa Sector Command, led by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Kwabena Adjei, stormed several locations believed to be linked to commercial sex activities.

During the exercise, officers rescued 112 females between the ages of 12 and 38. The group comprised 110 Nigerians, one citizen of Benin, and one Cameroonian.

After the rescue, immigration authorities transported the women and girls to a temporary holding facility in the Greater Accra Region, where officials conducted detailed interviews and investigations.

Findings from the Ghana Immigration Service’s Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons Unit showed that 105 of them were victims of trafficking.

Investigators, however, identified seven individuals as possible perpetrators in the suspected operation.

Working together with diplomatic missions and community leaders, the Service arranged for the victims to travel safely back to their home countries.

Authorities have not yet closed the case. The seven suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, and they may face legal action if evidence confirms their involvement.

Commenting on the issue, Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Basintale Amadu advised all foreign nationals residing in Ghana to obey the country’s immigration regulations and criminal laws at all times.
